James Strachey Barnes

James Strachey Barnes (1890–1955) was a British-born political writer, journalist, and theorist of Fascism. Born in British India and raised in Italy, he became closely associated with Benito Mussolini's Fascist movement and joined the Italian National Fascist Party. A Roman Catholic, Barnes sought to reconcile Fascist political doctrine with Catholic social teaching, emphasizing tradition, spiritual authority, and the restoration of European civilization. In 1927, he became Secretary-General of the International Centre for Fascist Studies in Lausanne.

Barnes is best known for The Universal Aspects of Fascism (1928), in which he presented Fascism as a political and social doctrine extending beyond its Italian origins. His writings advocated a traditionalist and authoritarian conception of society while rejecting liberalism and communism. During the Second World War, he participated in propaganda activities supporting Fascist Italy and the Italian Social Republic. He remained in Italy after the war and died in Rome on August 25, 1955.
