Giovanni Gentile

Giovanni Gentile (1875–1944) was an Italian philosopher, politician, and one of the principal theorists of Fascism. He developed Actual Idealism (Actualism), a philosophical system rooted in Hegelian idealism that placed the act of thinking at the center of reality. His political philosophy emphasized the ethical state, through which he believed the individual could achieve full self-realization.

Gentile served as Minister of Public Education under Benito Mussolini from 1922 to 1924. He authored the Manifesto of the Fascist Intellectuals (1925) and the philosophical portion of The Doctrine of Fascism (1932), written in collaboration with Mussolini. He remained associated with Fascism until his assassination by anti-fascist partisans in Florence on April 15, 1944.
